The
Trench coat
HOW TO CARE FOR IT?
• Washing: Favor spot cleaning on friction areas (collar, cuffs) to reduce the frequency of washing.
• Storage: Always on a wide hanger to maintain the shape, buttoned and belted, inside a breathable garment bag at the end of the season.
• Rain shield: It is essential to re-waterproof the fabric after every wash to maintain its water-repellent properties.
The trench coat is a highly technical, structured piece. To properly care for the cotton gabardine and preserve its legendary hold, here are the right habits to adopt season after season.
Trench coat care
Daily care relies on prevention. Gabardine is a tightly woven cotton fabric that naturally repels water. To maintain this protection, it is essential to waterproof your trench coat at least once a year (or after each wash) using a specific spray. Also, remember to regularly brush the fabric with a soft clothes brush to remove dust that gets embedded in the fabric's micro-grooves.
How to clean a trench coat without damaging it?
Wondering how to clean a trench coat without ruining its shape? The best solution for a thorough cleaning is dry cleaning. However, it is possible to wash a trench coat at home if the label allows it. If you choose to machine wash your trench coat, opt for a delicate cycle at 30°C maximum, with a small amount of liquid detergent. Remove the belt and buckles if they are detachable (or slip them into a laundry bag), and skip the machine spin cycle to avoid permanently marking the fabric with white streaks.
Stained trench coat: how to remove the stain?
A stained trench coat is the mid-season nightmare, especially since it often involves cleaning a beige trench coat, which is particularly prone to getting dirty at the collar, cuffs, and hem. For a collar darkened by sebum, rub gently while dry with slightly moistened Marseille soap before washing. For a greasy stain, immediately sprinkle with Terre de Sommières, let it sit for a few hours, then brush it off. Never scrub aggressively, as you risk discoloring the area.
Storing your trench coat at the end of the season
When warm weather or extreme cold arrives, knowing how to store your trench coat at the end of the season ensures you will find it in pristine condition the following year. Never leave it folded in a box, as this will cause irreversible creases in the gabardine. Hang it on a wooden hanger that is wide at the shoulders, button the double-breasted front, and tie or buckle the belt loosely. Slip it into a breathable fabric garment bag (avoid plastic) and store it in a dry place away from light.
Cotton gabardine: how to care for it
To perfect your routine, drying and smoothing require special attention. After washing, hang your trench coat while still soaking wet on a hanger over the bathtub or in the open air (never in the tumble dryer!). The weight of the water will smooth out the fabric. For ironing, use a medium temperature with plenty of steam, preferably inside out or using a pressing cloth so as not to make the gabardine seams shiny.
